StudentSafe: Designing an End-to-End Mobile Application

Mobile App Design

Reimagining Volunteer Training for Safer Spaces

[The Backstory]

Picture this: a youth pastor reaches out with a real concern - "We want to make sure every adult who volunteers with our teens knows how to keep them safe."

No fluff. No vague goals. Just a clear, urgent need: empower volunteers with tools to build safer, more accountable relationships with minors.

The ask? Create a digital experience that makes training accessible, engaging, and ongoing.

[01] Research

Competitive analysis to see what (if anything) was out there.

Stakeholder interviews with folks in youth ministry and nonprofit leadership.

User interviews with volunteers who’ve gone through typical onboarding.

[02] Insights

One quote stuck with me: “I think the lack of training post-onboarding is a huge problem.”

Most organizations nail the intro training… then drop off completely.

Volunteers were eager to do better — they just weren’t being given the tools.

[04] Testing & Iteration

Conducted usability tests with relevant stakeholders and users

Identified pain points and confusing UI elements to improve

Designed a mobile-first layout with larger touch-friendly buttons and simplified navigation.

[Branding & Design System]

Communicating brand values of safety, health, and professionalism, but with an inviting feeling and a sense of youth and playfulness. I designed the logo, set the color palette, chose the typography, sourced imagery and designed UI components that matched the brand.

[Outcomes]

Streamlined training for non-profit organizations
Increased safety for volunteers, stakeholders, and students
Improved mentorship for youth by improving safety
